On the surface, attorney Stuart Maples is a highly respected bankruptcy and business attorney who practices throughout Alabama. He is, of course, all that, but indulge me as I paint a picture of how I see Stuart in my mind, in light of my knowledge of my law partner, Brad Botes’ background. Please note that this borrows from and takes liberties with the cinematic classic, “Animal House.”
GREG: l'm not going to say Omega's the best house on campus... but a lot of outstanding guys figure they'll pledge Omega or won't pledge at all.
We do have more than our share of campus leaders... something that never looks bad on your permanent record.
Sure. Everybody says Omega's the best, but...
I hate to seem... you know, pushy.
Let the unacceptable candidates worry, because after tonight, they're....
...you are...Kent!
I'm Greg Marmalard, president of Omega House.
Meet my friends, Mandy Pepperidge...
We already met.
GREG: ...and Chip Diller.
CHIP: How are you?
How are you?
Over there is *Brad Botes, Student government president.
That's *Stuart Maples, editor of the Daily Faberian.
And...
Clayton.
Sidney.
Jugdish, Mohammet, Lonny--
-We already met.
-Super!
Then you'll have lots to talk about.
-I don't think you're trying very hard.
-I hate this.
No sweat. My brother Fred was a Delta.
That makes me a legacy.
They have to take me. It's their law.
Don't worry. I'll put in a good word for you.
Great. I heard Delta's the worst house on campus.
Brad, a Chicago boy by birth, found himself at the University of North Alabama and serving as the SGA president. At the same time, Brad had to contend with a hard driving reporter and political gadfly named Stuart Maples, who served as the editor in chief of the UNA student newspaper. Liberties with the “Animal House” script aside, I also recently found out that Stuart was a Sigma Chi fraternity member like myself. He and I discuss this on the podcast along with his history. Stuart now runs the Maples Law Firm and his representation and legal counsel is eagerly sought by a multitude of Alabama businesses and residents. I haven’t talked to Stuart in awhile and I enjoyed catching up with him on this episode, especially since I learned more of the collegiate back story from Brad!
