Alabama has a new bankruptcy judge. The Honorable Clifton R. Jessup, Jr. was sworn in on March 2, 2015 and will hear cases in the Northern Division of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Alabama which is based in Decatur, Alabama.
Judge Jessup comes to the bench from the firm of Greenberg Traurig LLP where his practice was focused on creditors' rights, business reorganization and bankruptcy. His distinguished career spans over thirty five (35) years during which he has appeared in bankruptcy courts in over thirty seven (37) states and Puerto Rico.
A graduate of Oakwood University located in Huntsville, Alabama, Judge Jessup remains a member of the school’s board of trustees. After he received a B.A., summa cum laude, from Oakwood University (then Oakwood College) in 1976, he went on to the University of Michigan Law School where he received his J.D. in 1978.
Highlights from Judge Jessup’s career include being listed amongst The Best Lawyers in America, Bankruptcy and Creditor Debtor Rights / Insolvency and Reorganization Law; Litigation - Bankruptcy, from 1999-2014. Additionally, Super Lawyers magazine listed him as a Texas Super Lawyers from 2003-2013.
It is clear that Judge Jessup brings a wealth of bankruptcy knowledge and practical experience to the bench. The parties and practitioners who will appear before him can expect that their cases will be heard by a knowledgeable judge with a practical understanding of the bankruptcy process.
