In light of recent events, namely the U.S Supreme Court’s refusal to stay a U.S District Court’s decision that Alabama’s same-sex marriage ban was unconstitutional, it is important for Alabamians to know that the Social Security Administration has begun accepting benefit applications for same-sex couples in states where it is legal.
While still in the early stages, spouses, widows / survivors and children of same-sex marriages in Alabama should be able to file for those benefits shortly. Once the process has been ironed out in the state, eligibility for additional benefits should be implemented further down the road.
The SSA has an excellent Frequently Asked Questions page on the topic that goes into further detail.
